CM Sarma further said that the state government has been taking strict measures against those involved in child marriage-related activities every six months
Assam government will launch a fresh crackdown against child marriages in the state from October this year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed.
“We will once again initiate strict steps against those involved in child marriage-related activities. I have already informed the state DGP about this and have asked him to take preparatory measures,” Chief Minister Sarma said.
Chief Minister Sarma further said that the state government has been taking strict measures against those involved in child marriage-related activities every six months.
“The people had initial apprehensions against the crackdown when we had launched it. But now people understand that what we are doing is not something wrong. Now, whenever I visit the villages, I often ask if there have been any incidents of child marriage. To this, people unanimously say that they are strictly against child marriage and that they will oppose it if anyone even thinks about it,” the chief minister added.
Chief Minister Sarma’s video was posted in response to the India Child Protection report released yesterday. The report stated that Assam witnessed a whopping 81% reduction in cases of child marriage across 20 districts between 2021-22 and 2023-24.
There have been zero child marriage cases in Jorhat and Nagaon between 2021-22 and 2023-24, as per the Towards Justice: Ending Child Marriage report released by India Child Protection.
The report findings are based on NCRB and data collected from 1,132 villages across 20 districts in Assam, with a population of 21 lakh, including 8 lakh children.
