CPI (M) called for a 12-hour bandh today in protest against the alleged murder of its candidate for Zilla Parishad in the August 8 panchayat polls
Mixed response was seen to the 12-hour Tripura bandh called by the CPI (M) today to protest the alleged murder of its candidate for Zilla Parishad in the August 8 panchayat polls.
Traffic on Agartala roads was thin, Sunday markets have opened, few shops too have opened. This is as per updates at 8 am today. The bandh began at 6am and will continue till 6pm.
Badal Shil, a candidate for South Tripura Zilla Parishad, was injured following an alleged attack by some miscreants in Rajnagar, South Tripura district on Friday.
Though he was transferred to GBP Hospital in Agartala after receiving treatment at a local hospital, Shil, however, succumbed to his injuries yesterday.
Meanwhile, Narayan Kar, Tripura Left Front convener, accused BJP cadres of attacking over a dozen Left Front party leaders and members since the announcement of the panchayat polls.
Regarding their protest plans, CPI(M) Tripura state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury stated that no picketing would occur during their shutdown programme. He urged people to support the dawn-to-dusk strike.
Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman declared his party’s support for the strike.
The State Election Commissioner (SEC) Saradindu Chaudhuri confirmed that elections for 6,370 seats across 606 gram panchayats, 423 seats in 35 panchayat amenities, and 116 seats in eight zilla parishad bodies are scheduled for August 8. The votes will be counted on August 12.
Notification for the elections was issued on Thursday, and nomination papers can be filed until July 18.
