Two days after Mahatma Gandhi’s statue was removed to make way for a clock tower in Doomdoma town in the Tinsukia district in Assam and the Mahatma’s grandson Tushar Gandhi reacting to it, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today stated that he was unaware of the decision and would delve into the matter.

Reacting to the criticism, Chief Minister Sarma replied, “I am not aware of this decision taken by the district administration. Let me verify the facts. Assam owes so much to Mahatma Gandhi. He stood firmly with Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi when the Congress party led by Nehru wanted to include Assam in Pakistan under the Grouping Plan.”

Tushar Gandhi, criticized the move by sharing a news article, commenting, “It is not surprising that the BJP government in Assam decided to replace Bapu’s statue with a clock tower in Dibrugarh. Their slavish colonial hangover persists.”

His response also comes after widespread criticism directed at the Tinsukia administration for dismantling the statue.

As per reports, municipal authorities removed the statue in the town centre on Wednesday to facilitate the construction of a clock tower, prompting protests from locals.

On Thursday, Doomdoma MLA Rupesh Gowala assured the public that a new and taller statue of Mahatma Gandhi would replace the old one at the same location.

He explained that the old statue was somewhat deteriorated, and the new one, along with site beautification, would be completed within six months.
