India-Zimbabwe T20 Series: Abisheh Sharma Out, Riyan Parag In?

First Published: 12th July, 2024 10:07 IST

Coach VVS Laxman may seek to restore balance in the batting lineup, possibly reintroducing Riyan Parag, known for his all-around abilities

Following a surprising loss in the first T20I, the Indian team, under young skipper Shubman Gill, has staged a strong comeback by winning the next two matches. They are now on the brink of clinching the series with a 2-1 lead. The reigning champions are now focused on sealing the trophy in the fourth match scheduled for tomorrow at Harare Sports Club.

In the third game, India made significant changes with the return of Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal to the squad. This comeback of the T20 World Cup-winning trio led to Riyan Parag, Dhurv Jurel, and Sai Sudharsan missing out from the playing eleven.

Despite Abhishek Sharma’s century in the second T20I, he was moved down the order to number three, with Jaiswal partnering Gill in the opening.

The restructured top-order posed challenges, necessitating Ruturaj Gaikwad to bat at number four. While India clinched a 23-run victory, criticism arose over the batting order, particularly the presence of four openers. The team’s approach to batting also drew scrutiny as the top order struggled initially to accelerate.

As a result, interim coach VVS Laxman may seek to restore balance in the batting lineup, possibly reintroducing Riyan Parag, known for his all-around abilities.

However, this adjustment might come at the expense of Abhishek Sharma, who has been a standout performer for India in the series thus far. Abhishek has also filled the role of a fifth bowler, a position Riyan Parag could fulfil.

India has been rotating their pace bowling options, resting Khaleel for the second T20I and Mukesh for the third. Following this trend, Avesh is likely to be on the bench for the upcoming game.

The strategy of fielding seven specialist batters has sparked debate, particularly due to the need for a consistent fifth bowling option.
