In a big political development in Sikkim, the State Legislative Assembly has gone opposition less today after the lone MLA of the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), Tenzing Norbu Lamtha joined the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).

Tenzing Norbu Lamtha who was SDF MLA from the 23-Syari Constituency met Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang at his residence in Mintokgang this morning and officially joined the SKM.

Lamtha discussed issues related to the welfare of his constituency with CM Tamang during the meeting and also proposed to work collaboratively for the benefit of the entire Syari Constituency.

CM Tamang took to Facebook and wrote, “I am pleased to meet the Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly from the 23-Syari Constituency, Shri Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, at my official residence, Mintokgang, today. Having left the SDF Party, he has officially joined our SKM family as the sole MLA of the SDF Party. During our discussion, he raised several commendable concerns related to the welfare of his constituency. I also welcome his proposals to work collaboratively for the benefit of the entire Syari Constituency, aiming for the comprehensive development of the area and its people.”

Tenzing Norbu Lamtha was the lone SDF MLA after he won the Syari seat in the recently concluded state assembly elections, in which SKM led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang swept across the state winning 31 of the 32 Assembly seats trouncing the SDF, a party that governed the state for 25 years in a row.

Tenzing Norbu Lamtha won the seat with 6633 votes defeating SKM’s Kunga Nima Lepcha, BJP’s Pempo Dorjee Lepcha, Citizen Action Party (CAP’s) Sonam Tshering Lepcha and Karma Tashi Bhutia of Congress.

Despite the overwhelming SKM wave, his ability to connect with constituents and address their concerns likely played a key role in his victory.

Tenzing Norbu Lamtha was the former Vice President of the SKM Panchayat Cell and Advisor to the Information and Technology Department of the Government of Sikkim.

He resigned from the SKM party and joined SDF in March this year and today he joined the SKM again.
