Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday told the assembly that the State government would move forward in the direction of a National Register of Citizens (NRC), based on the National Population Register in a phase wise manner and over a period of time by considering all pros and cons and taking all stakeholders into confidence.
Observing that an NRC exercise has huge financial implication besides manpower, the chief minister said it could not be done over-night and needed extensive consultations at various levels.
In the meantime, he said that the Meghalaya Residents Safety Act had adequate provisions to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people, which will be further strengthened.
