Women and children came out in large numbers to join the thousands of protestors who are demanding revival of the Hindustan Paper Mills in Silchar’s Cachar district of Assam. Atleast 10,000 people are estimated to have joined the protests.

The Mill has been shut since October 2015 owing to crunch of working capital and raw materials. Thousands of workers in the mill have lost their jobs and salaries of around 1200 permanent employees have not been disbursed since July 2016.

Starved for months and unable to educate their children, the sorry plight of all those affected burst out in anguish.

Police arrested, Action Committee President Manabendra Chakraborty, ABISA President Baharul Islam and many other agitating prostestors.

Protestors blocked the National Highway No 37 and National Highway No 6 since 7 am on Wednesday. The blockade affected the connectivity between Guwahati, Agartala and Meghalaya via Silchar.
