An FIR has been filed against an Indian-origin man, who is a professor in a United Kingdom university, for allegedly inciting violence and communities in ethnic crisis-hit Manipur through social media.
The FIR against prof Uday Reddy, a Computer Science Professor at the University of Birmingham, was registered at a police station in Imphal East on the basis of a complaint filed by a local resident.
As per first information report (FIR) filed by a local resident alleges that Prof Reddy had been working online, posting messages and organising talk sessions on social media platforms to create tension between communities on religious grounds in Manipur.
The police complaint also alleged the accused may be linked with Khalistani elements in Canada.
The complainant also told the police that Prof Reddy had been hosting audio discussions on social media directing people in Manipur on how to create trouble against law enforcement in the state.
The complainant further requested Indian authorities to contact Reddy’s workplace and inform them about the alleged criminal acts committed by him against India, adding that a lookout circular should be issued to monitor entry and exit points in India.
On X (formerly Twitter), a notice on Prof Reddy’s profile page indicates that the account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.
This incident is not the first time the account of a professor abroad has been withheld by X over a legal demand in India.
