Arunachal Vets operate on 13-year old tigress Chippi, removes 2 large tumours

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a team of veterinarians of Arunachal Pradesh successfully removed two large tumorous masses from Chippi, a 13-year-old tigress at the Itanagar Biological Park on Friday.

A team of skilled veterinarians, including Dr. Sorang Tadap from Itanagar Biological Park, Dr. Nido Tayo from the State Veterinary Department and Dr. Panjit Basumatary from the Wildlife Trust of India, who jointly removed two tumorous masses from the tigress’ neck.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu praised veterinarians and lauded the achievement. Taking to X, Khandu wrote, “A remarkable achievement in wildlife conservation! Kudos to the team of veterinarians – Dr Sorang Tadap, Dr Nido Tayo & Dr Panjit Basumatary – from @wti_org_india for performing a one-of-a-kind surgery on the tigress Chippi. The team diligently removed two large tumorous masses from her neck.”

“This intervention in the field of wildlife medicine will go a long way in conserving our ecosystem”, CM added.

Meanwhile, the Wildlife Trust of India also shared details of the historic surgery, and wrote, “In a first for Arunachal, vets performed lifesaving surgery on a 13-year-old tigress at Itanagar Biological Park.”

Chippi is currently recovering well from the groundbreaking surgery.

She was rescued from Dibang Valley in 2012 and rehabilitated at Itanagar Zoo since 2013.
