Meghalaya DGP expresses grave concern over crimes against women and children, new steps to stop it tops agenda of 2 day SsP – COs’ Conference

The Meghalaya DGP said 65% of cases which were chargesheeted especially in 2023 are related to crime against women and children.

Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang has expressed concern that 32 percent of the total crime in the state is related to crime against women and Children.

Stating that rising crime against women and children in the state will be one of the main agenda in the two days SsP – COs’ Conference, 2024, the DGP said 65% of case which were chargesheeted especially in 2023 are related to crime against women and children.

Speaking to newspersons at the Police Headquarter, DGP Nongrang said, “Yes it (crimes against women and children) will be a major agenda. When it comes to crimes against women and children, 65% of the cases which end up in chargesheet occured in 2023, were from cases of crimes against women and children. Yes crime against women and children are on the rise. If we look at the percentage of total crimes in the state, last year it was 32% of all the total crimes in the state which is a cause of concern.”

The Meghalaya Police is coming up with a proper cyber wing which will be situated at the Police Headquarters in Shillong.

With increasing numbers of cyber crime cases in the state, Police department has proposed having a cyber unit of the police.

Informing this Director General of Police (DGP) Meghalaya Idashisha Nongrang, IPS said it would be one of the thing that the police are focusing and will ensure the implementation is done very soon.

Regarding this the Meghalaya DGP said, “We are also looking at cyber crimes. In fact we have requested the government for a cyber unit, cyber wing in fact and the CM and the Dy CM have been gracious enough to give us a go ahead on that. It will be one of the things that we will be focusing on and ensuring that it comes into being very soon.”

Regarding the implementation of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita with effect from July 1, the Meghalaya DGP said, “Already in the run up to the implementation of the 3 laws from July 1, we had numerous training sessions already and numerous interactions with the concerned stakeholders as well as other states, on what are the best practices forward. The government has already notified about the BNSS and it would be applicable to the whole of Meghalaya. There are various aspects of it.”
