TIPRA Motha unhappy over progress of tripartite agreement, threatens to review alliance with BJP, might contest Panchayat polls alone

TIPRA Motha party’s core committee, including founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma today expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the tripartite agreement and threatened that the party might review its alliance with the ruling BJP.

The tripartite agreement, signed a few months ago in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, aimed to address TIPRA Motha’s core demand for a separate tribal state, Greater Tipraland.

It focused on providing socio-cultural, economic, and political rights to the indigenous population and for their development.

This agreement, considered politically significant, marked TIPRA Motha’s transition from the main opposition party in the BJP-led government in Tripura to an NDA partner with two Ministers in the cabinet.

Addressing a press conference at his residence, Motha president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl said, “We have a lot of responsibilities towards the people of the state and if we cannot fulfil them then there is no point. We the party members as well as party founder Pradyot Kishore Drbbarma are also unhappy that they (The Home Ministry) are not respecting the tripartite agreement. Maybe there is some changes in the idea.”

When asked whether Tipra Motha will contest without an alliance with the BJP in the state’s next Panchayat Elections in coming August in light of the indifference, he responded, “We cannot just remove our identity of being a regional party. We are ready and happy to fight the TTAADC village council elections separately.”

This decision, they emphasized, hinges on the state government’s stance. They threatened to reassess their alliance with the BJP if the state government played a negative role in supporting their demands.

A delegation of Tipra Motha also met the State Election Commissioner today and demanded for conduction of Village Committees General Elections of TTAADC and Bye-elections of its two vacant seats–10- Kulai-Champahour Constituency and Mandwi-Pulinpur Constituency with three-tier Panchayat Elections-2024 simultaneously.

It stated they would await the state government’s response regarding the TTAADC elections, which will determine the future of their alliance with the BJP-led NDA.

They also hinted at the possibility of contesting the Panchayat polls independently, outside the NDA alliance.
