A major disaster was averted on Monday in Assam’s Lakhimpur district when at least 40 people had a lucky escape after the engine of the boat they were travelling in developed some technical snag and stopped functioning mid way on the Subansiri River, creating panic among the passengers.

All the passengers were rescued later by the authorities. Meanwhile, it is also being alleged that besides the passengers, the boat was also carrying more than 20 motorcycles.

The state government has already initiated an enquiry into the tragic boat accident that happened on September 5, killing 3 people who were on board the ill-fated ferry that met with an accident on the Brahmaputra. The ferry was travelling from Guwahati to North Guwahati.

The Inland Water Transport department of the state has also started an internal enquiry to look into the maintenance and health of the ferries that carry an estimated 30,000 passengers every day across Assam.

The government had, in fact banned all private ferries on the Brahmaputra following the September 5 incident.
