Kanchanjunga train accident: Railway Ministey announces ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for kin of deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those injured

Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those who suffered severe injuries and Rs 50,000 for those who escaped with minor injuries in the Kanchanjunga Express train accident in West Bengal today.

The Minister in the evening inspected the accident site, assessed the damages, and directed immediate measures to restore rail services.

He also interacted with railway officials, local authorities, and rescue teams on the ground.

He also met the injured persons undergoing treatment at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.

The Minister said that the Indian Railways will ensure the best possible care and treatment for all the victims.

Earlier Prime Minister’s Office has also announced that Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased.

The accident happened today at around 8:55 am.

According to reports, a goods train overshot the signal and crashed into the Kanchanjunga Express, a daily train that connects Bengal with the Northeastern cities of Silchar and Agartala. Three coaches of the train were derailed in the crash.

As many as 9 people lost their lives in the accident while over 25 including the driver and assistant drivers of the goods train and the guard of Kanchanjunga Express were injured.
