Several residences, business establishments and vehicles of supporters and party candidates of the SDF Party were pelted with stones and vandalized late last night.

Less than 24 hours after the Prem Singh Tamang government 2.0 assumed office on Monday, unidentified miscreants have unleashed terror by targetting opposition SDF leaders and their properties.

Several residence, business establishments and vehicles of supporters and party candidates of the SDF Party were pelted with stones and vandalized late last night.

At least 4 such incidents were reported since last night till this morning.

The SDF in it’s social media handle said that properties of SDF senior vice-president Udai Lama, SDF vice-president Bhaichung Bhutia, SDF candidate from the Tumin Lingee constituency in the Assembly elections Norzang Lepcha as well Dr. Mechung Bhutia were vandalized.

Political activist and advocate Navin Kiran Pradhan was out of station but his old parents and wife were at home when the residence was attacked with stones, leaving them traumatised. His vehicles were also damaged in the incident.

Not only this, stones were also pelted at the residence of Arithang candidate Ashis Rai at 3.15 am. Moreover, several vehicles parked outside the SDF party office were also vandalised.

Meanwhile, SDF leader Komal Chamling who is also the daughter of former Sikkim CM Pawan Chamling has squarely blamed the PS Tamang government for the prevailing situation.

According to Komal Chamling, not only 4 but many more such incidents of violence against SDF leaders have taken place after the SKM retained power.

Komal Chamling in a social media post said that it is nothing but the repetition of what had happened in 2019 when the SKM came to power for the first time by ending SDF’s 25 years rule.

Komal in her post wrote, “Since the SKM government secured a second term on the 2nd of June, there has been a series of attacks on SDF cadre members and leaders. In 2019 as well, this was how SKM government inaugurated their term.

Yesterday, the night of the swearing in ceremony of the SKM government, there were attacks on the SDF Headquarters, Gangtok, Dr Mechung’s property, Shri Norzang Lepcha’s house, Shri Udai Lama’s house, Shri Bhaichung Bhutia’s house, Shri Navin Kiran Pradhan’s house. A series of attacks have also been carried out in the homes of SDF party cadre especially in Poklok Kamrang – Shri Samuel Rai’s house, Shri Prakash Rai’s house, Shri Philip Rai’s house, Shri James Rai’s house, Shri Prashant’s house. Shri Bikash Rai’s scooty was set on fire. Ms Nomi Lepcha’s car was burnt. Mr Loknath’s house was vandalised. Mr Rewas Limboo’s bike was set on fire. There have been many more such cases which have not come in the media.
The SKM party has secured a strong majority. They have formed the government and the people have given them the mandate for whatever reason. However, what is the need to resort to this kind of gundaism? In a democracy, there is always the ruling party and the opposition and it is the duty of the law agencies to ensure justice. It is the duty of the Governor to oversee what is happening in the state so that democracy and peace prevails. Unfortunately, in the past too, the pleas of the opposition have fallen to deaf ears.
This is the state of things in Sikkim.”
