Govt bows to Bindas Syiem, lone woman crusader fighting for good roads, Bindas breaks fast after 5 days

Meghalaya Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong has assured that the state government will take up with Centre for immediate sanctioning of over Rs 100 crore for the 20 km road stretch

Bindas Syiem sat all alone right outside the Meghalaya Secretariat in Shillong. She all by herself sat on an indefinite hunger strike since June 6. Five days later, today, she emerged victorious as the Meghalaya government had to bow before her, accept her simple demand of fixing the 20 km road stretch from Nongpoh – Umden to Sonapur and some other road stretches in Ri Bhoi district.

As her hunger strike drew media attention and support for the lone woman crusader began to pour in, Meghalaya Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong met Bindas Syiem and gave a written assurance that the road stretches would be fixed.

Bindas called off the hunger strike after the written assurance from the DCM who is in-charge of PWD (roads).

Accompanied by representatives of various groups and organisations, Bindas Syiem today met the Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, “The meeting was very productive, so I have requested her to call off her indefinite hunger strike. She ultimately agreed to do that also. We have done it (given the assurance) in writing.”
On Monday, the Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister had assured that the state government will take up with Centre for immediate sanctioning of over Rs 100 crore for reconstruction and widening of 20 km road from Nongpoh up to Umden and for construction of 39 km of road from Umden up to Lum-nongrim.
Tynsong said in March, the state government was able to submit through the North Eastern Council (NEC) to the Ministry for Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) for allocation of funds for the reconstruction and widening of 20 km road from Nongpoh to Umden at a cost of Rs 51-52 crore.
He further informed that the detailed project report (DPR) was being prepared and within few days, it would be submitted to the planning department following which, the government will send it to the NEC. Subsequently, the NEC will forward it to the Ministry of DoNER.
