The number of supporters is swelling. Several noted individuals, pressure groups and political parties have come forward to support her cause.

Fed up and tired of the absolutely back-breaking, bad road condition and false promises made by officials, Bindas Syiem, a lady from Umden in Ri Bhoi District of Meghalaya, decided to sit on a hunger strike all by herself to get noticed, shake up the authorities and get some attention for her cause.
Today her hunger strike entered the fifth day but no response yet from the concerned authorities or the government despite the fact that this lone lady crusader has been fasting right outside the Meghalaya Secretariat in Shillong.
Syiem has been fighting for the road stretch from Nongpoh – Umden to Sonapur which is in a deplorable state. She has been sitting on the indefinite hunger strike since Thursday demanding immediate construction of the road stretch but the government is yet to react.
The number of supporters is swelling. Several noted individuals, pressure groups and political parties have come forward to support her cause.
Extending full support to Bindas Syiem’s indefinite hunger strike demanding the blacktopping of the road from Nongpoh via Umden to Sonapur, a distance of 58 km, the leaders and members of HITO Umden Circle today stopped traffic as a mark of protest against the state government’s adamant attitude.
The organization insisted that the state government should take immediate action to meet the demand for a new blacktopped road, as the current road condition is deplorable, causing significant hardship for travelers.
Meanwhile, a team of doctors visited Syiem today to check her health condition. One of the doctors told Northeast Live that her condition is stable.
Reacting on the matter Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, “Firstly, I would request her to call off the hunger strike. We have already directed the team of doctors to monitor her condition. I have nothing to say, I have already explained all the details, the status of this project, as it is. So my only request to all concerned, not only to Kong Syiem, please understand the reality and please do not cross the limit. There is a limit for everything. Burning my effigies, you can do hundred times, but please do not disturb law and order and do not disturb the livelihood of the people.”
