Sikkim Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Tamang and his Council of Ministers at the swearing in ceremony to be held at Paljor

Prem Singh Tamang will be sworn-in as the 6th chief minister of Sikkim today. This will be the 56-year-old teacher-turned- politician’s second straight term in the Chief Minister’s chair.

Sikkim Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Tamang and his Council of Ministers at the swearing in ceremony to be held at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok.
Ahead of the swearing-in, we take a look at PS Tamang’s political career so far.

Born on 5th February 1968, PS Tamang also known as P.S Golay was a teacher who joined politics in 1994. First he joined the SDF. Tamang won the Chakung seat thrice in 1994, 1999 and 2004 as SDF candidate. In 2009 he shifted his constituency to Upper Burtuk and he won the seat.

He served as the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Industries and Housing in the SDF government.
In 2009, things took a different turn. Tamang turned a rebel after the Rolu picnic incident when the SDF government issued a show cause notice to the government employees who had gone for the picnic.
In 2013 he resigned from the SDF and formed Sikkim Krantikari Morcha in Soreng and became its President.

The newly formed party contested the 2014 Assembly election, and won 10 seats.
Tamang won the Upper Burtuk and the Namthang-Rateypani seats.

He won the Poklok-Kamrang seat in the 2019 by-election.

The same year, Tamang snatched the CM’s chair from his mentor, five time Sikkim CM and SDF patriarch Pawan Chamling winning 17 of the 32 Assembly seats and putting a stop to the SDF’s 25-year rule in the state.

On 27 May 2019, Golay, who did not contest the legislative assembly polls, was sworn in as the 6th Chief Minister of Sikkim. He won from Poklok-Kamrang in the by-election with 10,811 votes, securing 84% of the total vote share.
In the 2024 elections Golay led the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha to a landslide victory winning 31 out of 32 seats with a vote percentage of 58.38%. He emerged to be the giant killer decimating the SDF and leaving them with just 1 seat.
Tamang contested from the Soreng–Chakung and Rhenock seats and bagged over 20 thousand votes from both the seats.

Tamang is married to Krishna Rai who too is an MLA. She contested and won the Namchi-Singhithang constituency in the recent elections.
Tamang’sson Aditya Tamang is also a politician. He was the MLA from Soreng-Chakung seat in 2019.
