With exit polls already predicting a victory for the NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP and its allies in Assam are too anticipating the best show. Similarly, a sense of enthusiasm prevails among the NDA leaders in the Bodo heartland, where 2 seats- Kokrajhar and Darrang-Udalguri are up for grabs.

Just a day ahead of the announcement of the results, NDA candidate Joyanta Basmatary who is in fray from the Kokrajhar parliamentary constituency has exuded confidence of having the last laugh. Basumatary believes that he will win by a margin of more than 2 lakh votes.

In an exclusive conversation with Northeast Live, Joyanta Basumatary said, “I am very enthusiastic right now ahead of the counting of votes tomorrow. I am the NDA candidate from UPPL for Kokrajhar and quite hopeful that my victory is certain. I will win by a margin of over 2.5-3 lakh votes.

We have two constituencies in Bodoland one is Kokrajhar and the other one in Darang Udalguri. BJP’s Dilip Saikia is in the fray from the Darrang-Udalguri constituency, he is also going to win for sure. NDA is going to win because in Assam welfare schemes have reached every nook and corner as well as the last person under the leadership of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Because of this the people were eager to vote in favour of the NDA, as such they have done it too. As per our survey, in Darrang-Udalguri too, Dilip Saikia will win by a margin of more than 3 lakhs.”

“We will celebrate tomorrow because in the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency during the last 10 years, only politics surrounding Bodos and Non-Bodos had prevailed. But the mainstream parties could not stop this, but the NDA has projected me this time from Kokrajhar. Undoubtedly there will be celebration because after 10 years an NDA candidate is going to win. So I would request everyone to celebrate responsibly and maintain peace at any cost,” Basumatary said.

The key opponents of Joyanta Basumatary in this election includes former Deputy Chief of BTC Kampa Borgoyary of BPF, Gorjon Mushahary of Congress and 9 others. He is contesting Lok Sabha elections for the first time.

Earlier, he contested the 2021 Assembly elections in Assam as UPPL candidate from the Sidli constituency of Chirang district and won the seat by defeating sitting BPF MLA and three-time minister Chandan Brahma.
