Big achievement: Assam cricketer selected Uma Chetry selected to play for Women’s Indian Cricket Team

Uma Chetry has become the first player from Assam to be called up to an India squad.

It is indeed a milestone achieved for Assam cricketer Uma Chetry as she has received her much aspired maiden call-up to represent the national Women’s cricket team. Chetry, the first Assamese woman to be included in the national team, will be part of the side led by Smriti Mandhana in the multi-format series against South Africa.

Chetry will be replacing injured Yastika Bhatia.

The promising cricketer in her early 20s was also a part of India’s Asia Games squad that won gold in Hangzhou last year. Chetry also featured in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) debut earlier in the year for the UP Warriorz.

Soon after her selection in the Indian squad, parents of Uma were overjoyed on their daughter’s success and wished her all the best.

Uma’s mother said, “I was wondering what will happen, whether she will be selected or not. But after I received the news, I felt really good. She told me last night itself that she has been selected. My blessings as well as of the Almighty is with you, that is all what I can convey her at this moment.”

“I am very happy, she told me that the team will be playing against South Africa,” Uma Chetry’s father told.

The Assam Cricket Association in a post on social media conveyed greetings to Uma for her success and stated, “Congratulations, Uma🏏 Wicket keeper batter Uma Chetry of Assam has been named to represent India 🇮🇳 in all the formats (Tests, ODI & T20I) against the South Africa series.
Wishing Uma all the best.
ACA President Taranga Gogoi and Secretary Tridib Konwar have extended their best wishes to Uma.”

The BCCI in a post on X announced the squad, which includes-

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also congratulated Uma Chetry.

In a post on X the Assam CM wrote, “Congratulations to rising star Uma Chetry on being selected to the Indian Cricket Team for the upcoming series against South Africa. She is the first player from Assam to be selected in the Test squad of a cricket tournament.
My heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Uma!”

Uma Chetry was born on July 27, 2002, hails from Kandulimari village in Bokakhat division of Golaghat district, Assam.
