Tripura Congress and lawyers stage protests over 3-day power outrage in separate places in Agartala

The lawyers alleged that despite repeated complaints over the past three days, there has been no power or water supply in the court premises.

The Tripura Pradesh Congress, along with its allied frontal organizations, staged a large-scale protest on Wednesday, criticizing the Power Department for its failure to restore power supply across the state following Cyclone Remal.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of Power Minister Ratanlal Nath.

The protest rally commenced from the Congress headquarters in Agartala, winding through the streets of the capital city.

The demonstrators, carrying placards and shouting slogans, marched towards the corporate office of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL). Upon reaching the TSECL office, they staged a demonstration, vocally condemning the corporation and Minister Nath for their perceived inefficiency.

Speaking to NE Live, Congress spokesperson Partha Acharjee expressed the party’s grievances, stating that Tripura has been in darkness for the past three days.

He attributed this not to the impact of Cyclone Remal, but to the unpreparedness and mismanagement of the state government, especially the Power Department.

“The real issue is the government’s lack of preparedness,” Acharjee said.

“People are suffering not only due to the absence of electricity but also because of the cascading effects. The lack of power has disrupted the supply of drinking water, hindered household chores, affected internet connectivity, and impacted the lives and livelihoods of many residents.”

Acharjee held Minister Ratanlal Nath personally responsible for this crisis, citing his incompetence and failure to ensure the Power Department’s readiness and responsiveness.

“The suffering of the people over the past three days is a direct result of the Power Department’s failures. Minister Ratanlal Nath, who heads this department, was the Education Minister earlier and has destroyed that and now has shown gross incompetence and should, therefore, resign from his post,” he asserted.

On the other hand, a day after Tripura’s Power Minister announced that 90 percent of the power issues created due to Cyclone Remal in the state capital would be resolved within 24 hours, a large section of lawyers affiliated with the Tripura Bar Council blocked the busy Fire Brigade Chowmuni road in Agartala today.

This protest occurred opposite the West Tripura district court and Tripura State Legal Services Authority premises.
The lawyers alleged that despite repeated complaints over the past three days, there has been no power or water supply in the court premises.
This situation has caused significant inconvenience, affecting the smooth functioning of the court and the lawyers’ work.
Ratanlal Nath had informed that the cyclone had damaged 668 power poles, disrupted 234 Km of power lines, and damaged 82 transformers across the state.
