Considering the threat posed by Cyclone Remal in northeastern state Meghalaya, the West Garo Hills district administration has announced the closure of all educational institutes in the district tomorrow.
The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure that aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff as the cyclone approaches the region.
To lessen the impact on academic performance, educational institutions have been asked to use June 1 to compensate for the classes missed on May 28.
The district administration has also issued a list of Do’s and Don’ts during Cyclone/Storm to ensure the safety of all residents.
Do’s:
- People have been asked to stay informed about the latest news and warnings about the cyclone/storm and arrange a transistor radio, torch, batteries, candles, matchboxes, and water purifying tablets for emergencies.
- People have been asked to keep dry food, drinking water, and fuel in a safe place when a warning is issued.
- Residents are asked to ensure all loose boards, corrugated iron, unused tins, or any potential hazards are secured, as they can become dangerous during strong winds. They have also been asked to keep windows and doors properly secured, as strong winds can break them.
Don’ts:
Residents are urged to avoid going outside, ignore rumours, avoid using medicines that have passed their expiration date, to not take medication on an empty stomach, and to always check with the village’s first aid team before taking any medicines.
Different parts of the Northeast are experiencing heavy rainfall after cyclone Remal made landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal last evening before moving northwards towards the Northeast.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rainfall over all Northeastern states on May 27 and May 28.
The district administration has also issued a helpline number: 6009926806 in case of emergencies.
