First Published: 27th May, 2024 16:23 IST

The respective state governments in all the NE states have asked concerned agencies to take necessary steps for dealing with any kind of eventuality.

Different parts of Northeast are experiencing heavy rainfall after cyclone Remal made landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal last evening before moving northwards towards the Northeast.

Worth mentioning the IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall over Assam along with other Northeastern states on May 27 and May 28.

This has prompted authorities in the 8 Northeast states to take precautionary steps in a bid to minimize the impact of the rain and gusty winds, predicted by the IMD owing to the cyclone Remal landfall.

After at least 3 days of intense heatwave sweeping Assam, people heaved a sigh of relief following multiple spells of rainfall since last evening.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in a statement informed that extensive measures have been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the people in the wake of the impending increase in rainfall and wind speeds due to Cyclone Remal.

On the other hand, Red alert for extremely heavy rain has been issued for the Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts in Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also sounded alert in a post on X and said, “Cyclone Remal can bring inclement weather in parts of Assam. We are taking several precautionary measures. NDRF & SDRF teams are on standby, control rooms are operational and we are deploying a whole of government approach to keep our citizens safe. According to the State Disaster team till noon there has been no major incident or casualties except few incidents of trees breaking and causing some damages in Sepahijala and West Tripura district.

The Tripura government has positioned National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams at strategic locations, ready to respond if conditions worsen.
