Meghalaya Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri has informed that the state government is in talks with the BCCI to construct a cricket stadium of international standards in the area. Although the proposed plan is yet to be finalized and executed, Warjri said that the BCCI has already taken a stadium in the Ri Bhoi district.

Sharing details, Warjri told, “We are happy to inform you that BCCI has taken the stadium at Madan Kurkalang, which we are planning for a big cricket stadium. Right now I cannot say much, everything is in talks. We are still in discussion. We are in talks to come up with a big cricket stadium in Ri Bhoi. It will take about 2-3 months to finalize everything.”

Responding to concerns expressed that the state government is only prioritizing football rather than other sports, the Meghalaya Sports Minister said, “So it’s not that we are looking only into football, we have plans for cricket as well as many other disciplines. We are planning for swimming pool, we are planning for tennis, so there are so many things that we are planning. Its not entirely that our focus is only on football, but oru focus is on sports as a whole.”

Talking about the development of Sports infrastructure in the state, he said, the upgraded JN Stadium Sports Complex in Shillong will be inaugurated in December.

The renovated stadium would include a natural turf ground for football and a state-of-the-art facility for hosting track and field events.
