Silent rally in M’laya demanding justice for 2 minor victims of gang-rape

Meghalaya police so far arrested nine individuals in connection with the alleged brutal gang-rape of 2 minors.
A massive silent rally was organized in Ampati, Meghalaya on Thursday, demanding justice for the 2 minors who were gang raped at the annual Chenga Benga Mela in the South West Garo Hills (SWGH) district on April 16, 2024.
At least 8,000 people joined the rally, representing various organizations including the Meghalaya Koch Association (MKA), Meghalaya Koch Women Association (MKWA), All A’chik Youth Federation (AAYF), Meghalaya Hajong Welfare Association (MHWA), Hajong Students Union (HSU), Garo Student Union (GSU), A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), and Achik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO).
The rally organized by the Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union started at the Ghasura Cultural Centre and proceeded to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The protestors emphasized the urgent need for enhanced women’s safety measures within the state and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Ampati demanding justice for the victims.
Meghalaya police on April 29, arrested nine individuals in connection with the alleged brutal gang-rape of the 2 minors.
South West Garo Hills SP Vikash Kumar said that police have collected incriminating evidence from the scene of the crime and based on the statements of the survivors, medical examination reports, and other evidence, nine accused have already been arrested till date.
Reportedly, all the arrested accused are residents of Teporpara village in Assam which is located near the scene of the crime and the arrests have been made with the assistance of South Salmara district police in Assam.
SP Vikash Kumar said that two cognizable cases have been registered and further investigation is on.
