Tragic: 2 students suicide cases in a day reported from Assam and Meghalaya

In one case, a student was found hanging in the Shillong Polytechnic women's hostel, in the other case, an NIT Silchar student died by hanging himself

Two cases of alleged suicide by students have been reported in a single day from two institutes of higher learning in Assam and Meghalaya.

In one case, a student studying at the Shillong Polytechnic situated at Mawlai, allegedly died by suicide.

The body of the 24-year old student was found hanging in the institute’s women’s hostel.

Briefing the media about the incident, East Khasi Hills SP Rituraj Ravi informed, “Today early morning Mawlai police got information from the warden of women’s hostel at the Shillong Polytechnic Institute at Mawlai, that one lady had committed suicide by hanging. We are investigating the reason behind the suicide. Right now we are treating it as a matter of suicide, however, we are not ruling out anything. We are investigating the case from all angles.”

In the second case, a student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Assam’s Silchar was also found hanging. According to inputs, the deceased was staying with his parents in the NIT guest house and this morning, he locked himself inside the restroom.

His parents got worried when there was no response for a long time and the boy did not come out of the restroom. Suspecting something was wrong, his parents began knocking on the door. When they did not get any response, the door was broken open and the student was found dead.

Though the student was rushed to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, doctors declared him dead. The reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained.
