Petrol bombs the new weapon of violence in Meghalaya?

First Published: 1st May, 2024 20:22 IST

Meghalaya reported 7 petrol bomb attacks in less than a month. Two of these attacks were reported today

Has petrol bomb or Molotov Cocktail become the new weapon of violence in Meghalaya? Well, if the number of petrol bomb attacks in the state in just one month is anything to go by then it seems, a certain section of people is using petrol bombs either to create a sense fear among the people or maybe they are trying to drive home a point.

Since April 3, there has been 5 petrol bomb attacks – 4 in Shillong and one in Jowai and two attacks took place in the Shillong Sadar police station and Rynjah Police station in the early morning hours today, May 1.

On April 3rd, a petrol bomb was hurled at Mawlai Police Station. A police vehicle was damaged.
On April 24th, a petrol bomb was hurled at the escort vehicle of Major General (retd) Rajesh Kumar Jha who is now serving as NEEPCO director (Personnel).

Just two days later, on April 26, a petrol bomb was hurled at the residence of Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, in Nongmynsong, Shillong.

Four days later, on April 30, two incidents of petrol bomb attacks were reported – one from the Jowai Police Reserve where one vehicle was damaged and the other was reported from the Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation office in Shillong. As per CCTV footage, the bomb missed the parked cars by a whisker resulting in zero damage to any property.

One May 1, petrol bombs were hurled at 2 Police Stations – Shillong Sadar and Rynjah.

Interesting to note that despite so many attacks and even after the attack on the Deputy CM’s residence, no arrests have been made so far. This has raised questions about the functioning of the Conrad Sangma-led Meghalaya government and the police administration in the state.
