District magistrate Debopriya Vardhan told the media that the authorities are looking into immediately resolving the issues of the villagers and have requested the villagers to vote tomorrow.

Within hours of Northeast Live airing a story about around 300 residents of Thungchrai village, a remote hilly area of Sher Chandra Para, in Tripura threatening not to cast their vote tomorrow, government officials promptly sprang into action and are now working towards ensuring that the villagers concerns are addressed and they have access to better roads and clean drinking water.

The North Tripura district magistrate Debopriya Vardhan informed media that the authorities are looking into the matter and are working towards resolving the issues of the villagers.

A representative team of the District Magistrate, which included officials from Block Development Office (BDO), Drinking Water & Sanitation (DWS) and Public Works Department (PWD), visited Thungchrai village and began work much to the satisfaction of the villagers.

Northeast Live had carried a story yesterday where villagers said that since they did not have good roads nor did they have clean drinking water, they had decided not to vote when voting takes place tomorrow for the Tripura East Lok Sabha seat.

The villagers claimed that the area had never received clean drinking water and people had been forced to do with less than one litre of drinking water per day.

The villagers said that a delegation from the district administration visited Thungchrai village and after seeing their misery and distress, assured them of solving their problems and also requested them to vote in the elections.

There are a total of 9 candidates in the fray. The key candidates who will fight for the seat are Tipra Motha’s Kriti Singh Deb Barma who is contesting as the BJP candidate and, INDIA bloc candidate Rajendra Reang.

Kriti Singh Deb Barma is the elder sister of TIPRA Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma and her key opponent Reang is a veteran CPM leader and 3-time (2003, 2008, 2013) Kanchanpur MLA.
