Lok Sabha battle Phase 2: 74 candidates in fray for second phase of LS polls in NE

A total of 1,210 candidates will contest from 88 seats across 12 states and union territories, in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections

As many as 74 candidates are in the fray for 7 parliamentary seats in the Northeast states for the second phase of Lok Sabha polls, which will be held on April 26.

In second phase, 5 seats in Assam and 1 each in Manipur and Tripura will go to polls.

The seats in Assam include Karimganj, Silchar, Darrang-Udalguri, Nagaon and Diphu. In the other Northeast states, Tripura East and Outer Manipur seats will also go to polls.

A total of 62 candidates have filed nominations for the five Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam but Bikram Hanse, the independent candidate, withdrew his candidature. Now 61 candidates are in the fray.

In Tripura, 9 candidates will be in the fight after 5 nominations were withdrawn out of the 14 filed for lone Parliamentary constituency.

Among them, four candidates are contesting from the Outer Manipur constituency, which was notified in the gazette on April 5.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,210 candidates will contest from 88 seats across 12 states and union territories, in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

Out of 2,633 nominations filed, Kerala received the maximum at 500 from 20 constituencies and, after the final screening, 194 candidates are in the fray.

According to data from the Election Commission of India, after Kerala comes Karnataka where 491 nominations were filed from 14 seats and a total of 247 candidates are in the fray now.

The last date for filing nominations for the second phase for all 12 states and UTs was April 4. After the scrutiny of 2,633 nominations, 1,428 nominations were declared valid. The last date for nomination withdrawal was April 7.

The first phase of voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha election was held on April 19.

Voting for the first phase of the 18th Lok Sabha election 2024 has begun in 15 Parliamentary constituencies out of the total 25 Parliamentary constituencies in the Northeastern region of India today.

At least 96 candidates were in fray for 15 Lok Sabha seats in Northeast states.

As many as 35 candidates are in the fray in Assam, 10 each in Manipur and Meghalaya, 14 each in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, 6 in Mizoram 4 in Tripura and 3 in Nagaland.
