First Published: 9th April, 2024 20:37 IST

The NPP has decided to do so alleging that VPP members have been disturbing rallies and campaigns of other political parties in the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and a senior NPP leader, Prestone Tynsong today said that his party will file a complaint with the Election Commission against the Voice of People’s Party (VPP) for creating disturbances during election rallies at various places in the Shillong parliamentary constituency.

Tynsong briefing newspersons confirmed about the NPP’s decision to move the EC against the VPP terming the actions of the regional party as unfortunate.

Prestone Tynsong said, “We are going to that and we have to bring it to the notice of the EC because these kind of disturbance, we do not like to happen. Any situation which is unwarranted may happen, so therefore we will lodge a complaint, we will request the Election Commission to step in and make sure that fair campaign and election be held. As I said to You, see, first time ever I have seen such kind of things that’s happening now. It is very unfortunate.”

Tynsong added that previous parliamentary elections were by and large peaceful without any incidents of violence being reported.

“Otherwise all these past years what has happened was the MP elections, it was very cool and calm, nothing such altercation or this that happened. But this time as I said you it is very very unfortunate. Especially as I said you the members of the VPP look so desperate, the way they disturb wherever public meetings are held is totally unwanted,” Tynsong said.

Besides, the Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister also maintained that necessary instructions have been issued to the Meghalaya Police for taking appropriate steps, so that such incidents never happen again.
“That’s what I am telling we have already instructed the police force, from the state government we have our say on this and the direction has been given. I have told DGP, respective SPs to be alert and also not to allow such disturbances to happen while campaigning, be it any party or any candidate. Wherever they go for campaigning after due process or due allotment made by the Election Commission,” Tynsong further said.

“Nobody should disrespect, nobody should come in between to disturb any campaign of the candidates that we have, ” Tynsong insisted.

Inputs suggest that incidents of VPP workers disturbing rallies of other parties have been reported from Mawlai, Mairang, Jaiaw and Umsning.

The NPP has fielded cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh as it’s candidate from the seat, while the VPP has fielded Ricky AJ Syngkon. The UDP and HSPDP has fieled Robertjune Kharjahrin as the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) consensus candidate.
