Picnic turns tragic in Meghalaya: Father drowns while trying to save 10-year-old son

A picnic turned tragic in Meghalaya after a man drowned in the Umniuh River while trying to save his 10-year-old son from their sinking boat.

The deceased has been identified as Mahamsing Sten (38), a resident of Klew village Kyrdem in Ribhoi district.

As per inputs, Sten and his son along with his four friends went for a picnic near the Umniuh River in Ribhoi district yesterday.

They were enjoying river boating, but suddenly the boat started sinking. While the other four managed to swim to safety, Sten’s son was drowning. While trying to save his son, Sten drowned in the river’s deep waters.

Soon, a team of the State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) and police rushed to the spot and conducted a search operation. However, it could not locate Sten.

The team of SDRF resumed the search operation this morning and retrieved the body at around 10 am.
