SDF said that SKM supporters tried to stop their leader Pawan Chamling’s rally at Namchi and also tried to attack him, SKM has refuted the allegations

Three incidents of pre-poll violence, including an attempt to attack former Sikkim Chief Minister and SDF president Pawan Chamling sent political temperatures soaring in poll-bound Sikkim.
This afternoon opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) accused ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) of attacking their party president Pawan Chamling’s rally and also trying to attack Chamling. The SKM has refuted all such charges levelled by SDF.

As per reports, five-time Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling along with his supporters were en-route to a meeting at Kishan Market in Namchi when the group ran into hundreds of SKM supporters.

Supporters from both sides engaged in shoving and pushing with Pawan Chamling trapped between the two groups, even as police tried to bring the situation under control. Things suddenly escalated and a brawl broke out injuring several supporters including women who were later taken to the hospital.

Chamling, however, managed to escape unhurt.

In another incident, Soreng Chakung SDF candidate AD Subba sustained injuries that also left SKM worker Samten Bhutia seriously injured in the attack that took place in Soreng. Samten Bhutia sustained injuries on his head and has been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The SKM and the SDF have blamed each other for being behind the attack.

In the early hours on Monday, Rangpo Police Station has alerted about a disturbance at the residence of Pritam Dhamala in Sawney. The residence, currently occupied by SDF party candidate Anup Thatal, became the focal point of an incident involving members of the SKM party.

The Rangpo Police in the statement said, “Upon receiving the information at approximately 01.10 hours, immediate actions were taken by dispatching the Golitar Police beat team to the scene, given their proximity, along with SI Ashim Rai and the Quick Response Team (QRT) from Rangpo Police Station. Sector Magistrate Suren Tamang and SDPO Mahendra Subba were also promptly informed and engaged in the response efforts.”

“The preliminary investigation revealed that eight individuals, identified as members of the SKM party, entered Dhamala’s residence, leading to a confrontation. Allegations were made by the intruders that stones were thrown at them from the residence, resulting in minor injuries to three individuals: Pankaj Rai, Sonam Tamang, and Ranjan Pradhan. By the time police forces arrived at the scene, the alleged perpetrators had vacated the premises”, police said.

All eight accused have been arrested and are currently under police custody pending further investigation.

“In response to these serious allegations and following a thorough initial investigation, Rangpo Police Station has registered an FIR case number 18/2024 under sections 147/148/325/457/34 of the Indian Penal Code against the aforementioned individuals”, police stated.
