A day after the ECI announced the poll dates for the Lok Sabha election, the Meghalaya Election Department too has geared up for the free and fair conduct of the polls.

Another priority of the Meghalaya Election Department is that there is maximum participation of voters to celebrate the biggest festival of democracy.

From using the traditional to the cultural aspects to the usage of modern day social media, Election Department dept is adopting every means to motivate people to exercise their franchise.

Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya Dr BDR Tiwari spoke to North East Live about the kind of arrangements being made to fulfil the objectives.

Speaking in details as to how the Election department is reaching out to the voters, Meghalaya CEO BDR Tiwari said, “This is our primary objective and we are taking all needful measures.”

In fact the Meghalaya Election Department is ready with the Turnout Implementation Plan (TIP).

Regarding this the CEO said, “We have prepared a total comprehensive plan upto the grassroot level- the Turnout Implementation Plan (TIP) has been done, we have made our strategy upto the booth level. We have indetified the booth with less voters. We are engaging, partnering with the grassroot level institutions. Moreover, we are engaging with the sports, youth icons. Recently we have signed a MoU with the Education Department, to promote the young voters. So all such initiatives we have taken up and we are quite hopeful that the voting percentage in Meghalaya will increase.”

Since culture and traditions play a key role in Meghalaya’s society, the Election Department is also focussing on this aspect and use it as a tool to ensure maximum participation of voters.

In this context, the Meghalaya CEO said, “Basically the communites are closely binded and so why still as the 6th Schedule state the role of Village Durbars, village elders and to promote the young voters, young people to come forward, to caste their votes is very crucial and important. So we just motivate the social measures also and through social media and other way to inspire, to promote the young voters.”

“Traditionally we have seen the urban areas specially like the Shillong parliamentary constituency has less voting as compared to the assembly constituency. So we are trying our best at all the nook and corner, grassroot level engaging the cultural strength and the youth force of our state through sports, music and all the other means so that more and more voters come forward to caste their votes,” Meghalaya CEO BDR Tiwari further said.
