Sikkim’s marathon girl Phurba Tamang wins 3rd Tsomgo Ultra Marathon, covers 75km in less than 10 hrs

In a proud moment for Sikkim, Phurba Tamang, known as the Marathon Girl of Sikkim, achieved a remarkable feat by winning the 3rd edition of Tsomgo Ultra Marathon held on Sunday.

Tamang covered a staggering distance of 75 kilometers with a commendable time of 9 hours, 48 minutes, and 16 seconds.

In recognition of her stellar performance, Phurba Tamang was awarded the prestigious winning medal along with a cash prize of Rs. 35,000, symbolizing her triumph over adversity and her unwavering commitment to excellence in athletics.

The event, which commenced from Ganesh Tok in Gangtok and culminated at the majestic Tsomgo Lake situated at an altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level, witnessed Phurba Tamang’s exceptional prowess as she outpaced her competitors to claim the top spot for the third consecutive year.

Soniya Rai and Divya Chettri secured the silver and bronze medals respectively, trailing behind Phurba Tamang in this grueling endurance test.

Phurba Tamang, a long-distance runner from Lingmoo, South Sikkim, has made a name for herself in the sport by exhibiting unmatched commitment and tenacity in each race she enters.

Phurba’s outstanding accomplishment was enhanced by the direction and instruction given by her coach, Basant Pradhan, the Chief Coach of the Department of Sports, Government of Sikkim.

Earlier last month, Tamang won the third position in the Women’s Open Category of the 9th Edition of the Apollo Tyres New Delhi Marathon.
