In a follow up question, the Manipur CM was also asked about how soon the NRC will be implemented in the state.

In a strong message, Manipur Chief Minister Narendra Modi today affirmed that his government will leave no stone unturned to deport the illegal migrants who have entered the state.

This statement from the Manipur CM assumes significance as it was only on Friday (March 8) that 77 illegal migrants who had entered from Myanmar were deported.

Speaking to newspersons, after PM Modi launched a series of development projects worth over Rs 3500 crore in the state, the Manipur CM in no uncertain terms said that his government will continue to deport the infiltrators.

CM N Biren Singh said, “You see number is huge, so we cannot deport altogether at one time, so part by part we are deporting and some legal procedure also we need to take, so we are following that procedure, we are deporting them and we will continue to deport.”

In a follow up question, the Manipur CM was also asked about how soon the NRC will be implemented in the state.

In his response the Manipur CM said, “You see the NRC decision has to be taken by the central government, so our part lies is for only the recommendation. Our Assembly has passed a resolution and recommended but now the rest is in the hands of the Union Ministry. So I will request and follow it.”

Soon after the deportation yesterday, N Biren Singh in a post on X had informed, “In a post on X, Manipur CM N Biren Singh wrote, “First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today.
Although India is not signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has given shelter & aid to those fleeing the crisis in Myanmar on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach.”

The deportation of illegal immigrants from Myanmar comes within weeks of the decision to suspend the Indo-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR) and fence the entire 1,643-km stretch of its border with Myanmar. The FMR allowed tribal people living along the border to travel 16 km into each other’s countries.
