Assam: Big security breach in Dibrugarh Jail, Spy cams and other gadgets found in NSA cell

In a rather big breakthrough, the Assam Police has busted a plot wherein unauthorized activities inside the Dibrugarh Central Jail were going on for quite some time. Recovery of electronic gadgets which otherwise are prohibited for the inmates and that too in the high security National Security Act (NSA) Cell clearly says that it is one of the high profile security breach in the highly guarded jail.
Assam Police DGP GP Singh informed about the recoveries which included smartphones, spy-cam pens, pen drives and few other electronic gadgets. The police could bust these after inputs received confirmed about the occurence of unauthorised activities in the NSA Cell.
Accordingly, necessary steps were taken up including installation of CCTV cameras in the public area of the NSA Block. Keeping in mind about the gravity of the situation, the police is trying to ascertain as to how such articles reached inside the high security zone and their source.
DGP GP Singh informed about the recovery in a post on X and said, “Reference NSA detenues at Dibrugarh Jail, Assam – On receipt of Information about unauthorised activities taking place in NSA cell, additional CCTV cameras were installed in public area of NSA Block. Inputs received confirmed unauthorised activities, based on which Jail staff searched the premise of NSA Cell early this morning, leading to recovery of smartphone with SIM, keypad phone, TV remote with keyboard, spy-cam pen, pen drives, Bluetooth headphone & speakers and smart watch which were lawfully seized by Jail staff. Source of these unauthorised articles and mode of induction is being ascertained. Further lawful action is being taken and steps being taken to prevent recurrence.”
Of around 420 inmates in the jail, only 10 prisoners, including separatist leader Amritpal Singh, are the only ones booked under the NSA.
On April 23, 2023, Amritpal Singh was brought to the Dibrugarh Central Jail after the Punjab Police arrested him from the state’s Moga district after several weeks of manhunt.
