Tripura: 12 Bangladeshi nationals repatriated

The Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh described the moment as a joyous occasion for the returnees and their families.

12 Bangladeshi nationals, including six women and one minor, who were detained in India for illegally entering the country, were repatriated to Bangladesh from Tripura through the Agartala integrated check-post today.

Arif Mohammed, Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala who was present during the repatriation process expressed gratitude towards the Governments of India and Tripura, as well as the External Affairs Minister of Bangladesh, for facilitating the repatriation.

The Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh described the moment as a joyous occasion for the returnees and their families.

Briefing newspersons, Arif Mohammed, Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala said, “Today we are happy to declare that 12 Bangladeshi nationals who have been detained and under waiting to be repatriated to Bangladesh are being repatriated today. We have done all the formalities to send them back. Their waiting time on an average was 6 months to 2 years, it happens due to lot of formalities. Both the governments are concerned enough and are working together to reduce this waiting time.
Out of the 12, 11 are adults and they entered into India illegally without valid documents. They had entered India in search of work. After they entered they were caught by local law enforcement agencies and had to face the legal procedures eventually.”

Despite more than 90 percent of the 856 kilometres long international border between Tripura-Bangladesh have been fenced, infiltration has been a major concern with regular arrests of foreigners – Bangladeshi and Rohingyas in Tripura which is considered a corridor for illegal infiltration.
