Kharkrang said that the government cannot extend the terms on flimsy grounds
Meghalaya BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang asked the government to spell out exactly why the terms of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) were extended for another 6 months.
Speaking to the media, on Sunday, Kharkrang said, “Public would want to know from from the government what emergency situation arose that warranted the extension of the terms of the district councils. You cannot extend the terms of the district council on flimsy grounds, there has to be some valid reasons. We are waiting for the government to come clean on that.”
It maybe mentioned that on February 2 the Meghalaya Cabinet gave its nod for the extension of terms of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by 6 months. Recently both the district councils, sent proposal to the state government for extension of the Delimitation Committee.
Last year towards the end of 2023, the Governor had granted permission to both the district councils for the constitution of the Delimitation Committee.
