Koch language could soon be introduced in the schools of the Koch-dominated areas of the state, stated chief minister Conrad Sangma on Saturday.

The community submitted a memorandum to the chief minister during their 54th annual conference at Jatrakona in South Garo Hills.

Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma, while addressing the gathering at the conference assured the community that the government will consider to include the Koch language in the state.

Taking to X, Sangma said, “At Jatrakona in South Garo Hills to join our Koch brothers and sisters in the 54th Annual Koch Conference organised by the Meghalaya Koch Association. Stressed on the need to preserve indigenous languages and have assured to look into their suggestion to introduce Koch language in schools in Koch areas of Meghalaya.”

“The Association had submitted a memorandum for capacity building for Koch people and the preservation of their language for which I have assured to look into. Have also suggested interventions like PRIME, CM-ELEVATE and YESS Meghalaya for the youth of the Koch community”, he added.

“I am humbled by the love they showered me today and together as indigenous people of our beautiful State, we will work together and uplift each other for the welfare of our people and the growth of Meghalaya. Thank the Meghalaya Koch Association for their very gracious invitation.”, CM Sangma tweeted.

Last year on November 4, CM Sangma announced that the local languages will be introduced as mandatory subjects in various state examinations, reflecting the commitment to promote these languages through various interventions while awaiting their official inclusion in the Eighth Schedule.

He said that the state Government has been continuously engaging with the centre to include Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
