Meghalaya cabinet approves extension of terms of KHADC, JHADC by another 6 months

Terms of both the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will expire on March 5
The Meghalaya Cabinet today gave its nod for the extension of terms of present Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by 6 months.
Informing this after the cabinet meeting Deputy Chief minister Prestone Tynsong who is also the Minister in-charge of District Council Affairs said that since the terms of both the Councils will expire on 5th March 2024, the extension will be effective from that date.
Mentioning about the government’s decision to extend the terms of the KHADC and the JHADC, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said, “We had received a proposal from the District Affairs Council (DAC).
Last year towards the end of 2023, the Governor had granted both the District Councils for the constitution of the Delimitation Committee. This Committees are on the job as per the prescribed guidelines.
Recently both the district councils, sent proposal to the state government for extension of the Delimitation Committee. And that extension was also sought by both the Delimitation Committees through the Executive Committees of both the KHADC and the JHADC. The cabinet this evening has accepted the proposal for extension of the present terms of both KHADC and JHADC for another 6 months.”
It may be mentioned that last year (2023) the Governor had approved the constitution of the delimitation committee for both the district councils.
