Meghalaya LS polls: NPP does not see threat from other parties

First Published: 1st February, 2024 13:47 IST

Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak feels that other parties including the Congress and the BJP has no winning chance at all from the seat.

With politicking picking pace in Meghalaya in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, the NPP is quite confident of winning the Tura seat, a family stronghold of the Sangma family.

To continue with her father PA Sangma’s legacy, the incumbent MP-Agatha Sangma is certainly looking for retaining the seat.

While the elections in the seat is expected to be a multi-cornered fight, the NPP leadership feels that as of now Agatha Sangma has no competitors at all. Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak feels that other parties including the Congress and the BJP has no winning chance at all from the seat.

Marak feels that even former Chief Minister and Meghalaya TMC chief Mukul Sangma will not be able to make any impact.

Backing his idea, Marcuise N Marak speaking on whether the Congress will be able to make a impact said, “Well that is something to be seen because normally Congress is a party which is totally forgotten by the people of the state. And they do not have any good leaders with them, so therefore it will be very tough for them to come up to the level where they have been before.”

Asked if Saleng Sangma, whose name has been cleared by the Congress Screening Committee as a candidate for the Tura seat, is a threat to the NPP, Marak said, “I don’t see Saleng Sangma as a threat to Agatha’s candidature. We welcome him, it will be a good fight. Since Saleng is the sitting MLA so definitely an MLA has grounds with him. We are ready to fight with him.”

Regarding the BJP Marak said, “BJP we have seen in the last assembly elections, they were 2 and they became 2 again (MLAs). SO therefore we can come to the conclusion that it is not acceptable in our state.”

Not only this, the NPP leader maintained that even if Mukul Sangma joins the fray than too he will not be able to make an impact.

Marak stated, “Well, his charm has also gone down, so therefore we do not find any threat with him also.”
