Situation in Moreh might deteriorate: Manipur Govt to MHA

In a letter to the Union Home Ministry, Manipur Home Commissioner has requested for helicopters to be stationed at Imphal for airlifting security personnel and ammunition to Moreh

Amid continuous firing in the border town of Moreh in Manipur, the state Government in a communique to the Union Home Ministry has cautioned the Centre that the situation might deteriorate further and has sought deployment of choppers in Imphal (capital of Manipur) to airlift security personnel and ammunition to Moreh.

The letter from the office of the Manipur Home Commissioner reads, “The law and order situation at the border town of Moreh has become a matter of serious concern as there have been continuous exchange of fire taking place…In view of the prevalent situation, situation may deteriorate further in Moreh…Police Department has also informed that there is also need for airlifting of security personnel, ammunition etc. to Moreh.”

“It is, therefore, requested that MHA may kindly provide MHA Air Asset (Helicopter) to the State Government and place it at Imphal immediately from today, 17.01.2024 onwards for at least a period of 7 days to meet the emergency requirements,” the communique further said.

Meanwhile, firing has been going on since 3.30 AM this morning and 2 security personnel including one IRB personnel have died while two others have been injured in the exchange of fire. The injured have been airlifted to RIMS in Imphal.

Top official sources told Northeast Live that the gunmen are using snipers, rocket propelled grenades and pistols.

Fresh gun battle started in Moreh on December 31 last year. Curfew has been clamped in Moreh and people have started fleeing the town bordering Myanmar.
