Despite Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s clear dictate and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) being issued, another gory accident took place today involving picnic goers, mostly students, in Hailakandi district of Assam.
At least 20 people are said to have been injured, condition of 10 are said to be critical.
All injured have been rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for treatment.
The accident took place when the vehicle the picnic goers were on, collided with a car and toppled from the road falling into a gorge.
Today’s accident comes within days of the January 3 tragic accident at Dergaon in Eastern Assam’s Golaghat district that claimed the lives of at least 11 picnic goers including 3 minors.
The accident took place after the bus carrying the picnic goers collided head on with a truck at Dergaon.
Reacting to the horrific accident, the state government on the same day issued a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at preventing such tragedies during the ongoing picnic season and prioritising the safety of citizens.
According to the SOP, picnic goers have been asked to come out for picnics only after the early morning fog has dissipated and to return home before the fog comes back.
