When we think about the most polluted cities in India of 2023, names like Delhi and Mumbai spring to our mind, but a report has found that the answer to the question is Meghalaya’s Byrnihat.

A report published by The Centre for Energy and Clean Air has revealed that Meghalaya’s Byrnihat was the most polluted city of the past year, followed by Begusarai in Bihar and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

National capital New Delhi, often criticized for its poor air quality was at the 8th position.

Of the top 50 most polluted cities Bihar had the highest representation with 19, followed by Haryana and Rajasthan with 8 each.

The report is an update on the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The programme was launched in 2019 to significantly enhance the air quality in India by 2024. It aims to reduce the Particulate Matter (PM), a mixture of chemicals, by 20-30 per cent. Later the aim was extended to reduce PM by 40 per cent in 2026 as compared to 2017.
