Assam may soon get a law prohibiting the forceful collection of donations. In a significant statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government is mulling bringing in a law that would penalise anybody who indulges in forceful collection of donations, which would amount to illegal extortion.

CM Sarma said that entrepreneurs and businessmen earn money through hard work, and the government must ensure that certain elements in society do not exploit them in the name of collecting donations for various reasons.
