The United States Coast Guard has launched a search for 39 people who went missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Florida in a “suspected human smuggling venture,” it announced Tuesday.

On Tuesday, officials were alerted after a fisherman rescued a man clinging to a capsized boat approximately 45 miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet.

According to the survivor who is yet to be identified said that the group left Bimini, Bahamas, on Saturday night and was hit by bad weather and capsised.

Bimini is located 80 miles west of Miami and is the westernmost district of the Bahamas.

None of the passengers wore life vests, said the survivor.

The search is being led by the Miami Coast Guard sector using ships and aircraft.

It may be noted that human smugglers are known to use the Bahamas, a group of islands off the coast of Florida, as a staging area for bringing people into the United States, many of whom are from other Caribbean countries such as Haiti.
