On 73rd Republic Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed satisfaction that for the first time in years no bandh has been called in either Independence Day or Republic day indicating that the state is heading towards permanent peace.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after paying tribute to martyrs at the Shraddhanjali Kanan in Guwahati, termed this Republic Day significant as no outfit had boycotted the occasion for the first time in decades.

Notably, On January 23rd the United Liberation Front of Assam or ULFA-Independent (ULFA-I) has announced that it will not be issuing any bandh calls on Republic Day 2022. Not just this, the outfit has also stated that it would not engage in armed protests on January 26.

This has been informed through a communique by ULFA-I Commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah. Baruah said the decision has been taken in consideration with the current COVID scenario in the state.
