In a major development, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will now back the ruling BJP on the floor of the Assembly. Making this announcement in a press briefing on January 23rd, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, however, clarified that the BPF will not be a part of the ruling coalition in Assam as yet, but will support the ruling coalition in the state Assembly.
The move is being seen as a step taken towards rekindling the full-fledged ties between the BJP and BPF and its leader Hagrama Mohilary which took a step back ahead of the last assembly elections.
With this now, the strength of the BJP-led coalition will rise to 82 in the house. The move also gives rise to fresh speculations on whether Assam is heading towards an opposition-less government with more and more opposition MLAs including those from the Congress and AIUDF too extending direct or indirect support to the Himanta Biswa Sarma led government.
The BPF and the BJP had gone their separate ways during the last Bodoland Territorial Council polls when the latter joined Pramod Boro-led United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) ensuring a win for the new coalition.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma added that the new dynamics between BJP and BPF at the Assam Assembly shall not impact its arrangement with UPPL.
