Assam Meghalaya Border Issue: State cabinets approve regional committee reports, CMs to meet Shah today

After the Cabinets of both Assam Meghalaya have given their approval to the reports of the regional committees for resolving the inter-state border dispute in the six areas of difference taken up in the first phase.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma will now leave for New Delhi today to submit the respective reports to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The big breakthrough comes ahead of Meghalaya’s 50th statehood celebrations on January 21. Prior to the Cabinet approval, the reports of the regional committees were discussed with political parties, pressure groups and student organisations of both states.

Addressing media persons following the cabinet meeting in Haflong yesterday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the Cabinet has given approval to the regional committee reports and that the same will now be submitted to the MHA.

Earlier Briefing media persons after the cabinet meet, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the interest of the states and stakeholders have been kept in mind before coming to the decision.

Sangma also said that the sentiments of the inter-border populace have been taken into account before approving the reports.

Meanwhile, CM Sangma informed that the next step will be to submit the reports to MHA.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister added that while administrative control will be exercised by the states, the demarcation of the border will be done by centre.
