The Manipur police in a joint operation with the Assam Rifles have busted a big plan of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (Peoples War Group) (KCP-PWG) to extort money from intending candidates of different political parties ahead of the poll battle.
Acting on specific inputs, the Imphal East police arrested 4 cadres of the outlawed outfit. The big development comes at a time when Manipur is witnessing incidents of pre-poll violence in the run-up to the state assembly elections.
Briefing media, Imphal East SP M Pradip Singh elaborated about the sequence of events leading to the arrest of the KCP rebels and said that at least 30 extortion letters were recovered from the rebels. Besides, a sizeable quantity of drugs WY Tablets was also recovered from their possession.
Meanwhile, Imphal East SP M Pradip Singh said that such incidents are not politically motivated but can be considered as rebel groups trying to take advantage of the situation. Security forces are also keeping a close tab on the flow of liquor, drugs, use of licensed arms among others.
