With the killing of civilians in Nagaland’s Mon district, the demand for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) has been growing louder day by day across the Northeastern states.

Speaking to the media CM Sangma said, “As a party and as an individual we have always been against the AFSPA Act when we have maintained our stand that the AFSPA has not served the purpose it was meant to.”

He further said that there are many other ways to solve the insurgency problem that the region is facing and that AFSPA is not a way to resolve these issues.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma then noted that it is high time for the Northeastern states to be united and appeal to the Government of India to repeal the AFSPA act or not to make it applicable in the Northeastern region of India.

Meanwhile, Mutchu Mithi, NPP leader from Arunachal Pradesh also joined the voices against AFSPA.

He said that the AFSPA should be repealed from the Northeast as a vibrant Democratic country like India does not need such an Act.
